I am currently reading through the Chronicles of Narnia series by C.S. Lewis, and this past Sunday I was reading the second half of the first book, The Magician’s Nephew. I was in awe the whole time of how simple the writing and story line is but how well it depicts the character of God. Aslan, the Lion who represents God, has just created Narnia and is talking with Digory, a young boy from our world. Digory’s mother is very sick and Digory wants to find a way to heal her so he hesitantly goes up to the Lion, scared to look at his face and asks him if there is anything he can do to heal her. In the book it says

Up till then he had been looking at the Lion’s great feet and the huge claws on them; now, in his despair, he looked up at its face. What he saw surprised him as much as anything in his whole life. For the tawny face was bent down near his own and (wonder of wonders) great shining tears stood in the Lion’s eyes. They were such big, bright tears compared with Digory’s own that for a moment he felt as if the Lion must really be sorrier about his Mother than he was himself.

As I read this I started crying thinking about how much God cares about us. How interested he is in our lives. How the things that make us cry, the things that make us sad and break our hearts, break the Lord’s heart more than they break ours. He is not a God that stands back and lets us struggle and do whatever in this world. He is crying beside us when we cry and holding us through it.

I just continue to think of this image of a mighty lion, who has so much power, but also has tears in his eyes, such deep compassion in them. And that is who God is and how he cares for us.

Here is an image that I found on google that semi represents this picture in my brain.
